Dr. Joseph Wing-On Tam
A Ph.D. in chemistry, Dr. Tam was the Founder, Secretary and President of the Hong Kong Biochemistry Association. He has been a Visiting Professor at UCSF, BMC, Augusta College of Medicine and Universities in China, and a Visiting Scientist of NIH and R&D Director of EY Laboratories Inc. He is an Honorary Associate Professor, at HKU, the Founder and Honorary Chairman of the Pangenia Group, and Director of the Technology Transfer Office, HKU.
Dr. Tam’s interests spread from protein to molecular biology. He has published in PNAS, Blood and other journals in genetic disease, DNA diagnosis, DNA fingerprinting and applied genomics. His laboratory in HKU embarked on rDNA technology in 1978 and he cloned the first human thalassemia recombinant libraries in 1981. In 1983, he introduced rDNA technology to train regional scientists. His laboratory has since cloned many genes, uncovered mutations including two of the eight known beta[1]thalassemia mutations among the Chinese.
Dr. Tam has many patents granted from molecular diagnostics to biometric application. The U.S, patented Flow-Through DNA Hybridization Process is being applied in DNA macro and microarray development worldwide. Dr. Tam founded several biotechnology companies namely HybriBio, DiagCor, and Pangenia. After retiring from HKU, he established a platform for Hong Kong University science graduates to work and excel. JT Technology and Consultant Company Ltd. is acting as a pre[1]angel investor, by investing in and advising early-stage startups in biotechnology and life science to help them build value to increase the odds of success. Two companies founded by Dr. Tam have gone on to become billion-dollar market cap successes.
